Today there are many cheap flights from many European major cities to Paris. We don't know the exact reason for this but my educated guess is the decreased passenger volume that makes low fare carriers to lower their prices to keep their planes full. What has lead to the decreased volumes is most likely the terrorist fears that have also decreased the hotel prices in Paris this summer. So if you are planning to visit Paris and you are not afraid of terrorist attacks its now cheaper than ever. The chances that you find cheap flights from your home city to Paris and back are now higher than ever and you also have good chances to find surprisingly cheap hotels in Paris.
Maybe today is good day to plan your next visit to Paris, you can start planning your trip from this link where you find latest Paris hotel offers and bargain prices.
Cheap Flights Sales is THE blog about cheap flights and low cost airlines in Europe. I write about major low cost carriers such as Ryanair, EasyJet and Wizzair and also about smaller niche players in the airline industry.

Low fair airline news summary - Trends in the low cost carrier industry
Many things have happened in the low cost airline business and I think it's time for good summary about some major trends and changes in the industry.
Long distance low cost flights - Norwegian is in the business and Ryanair planning it
Cheap Airlines have traditionally their major cost advantage in short routes where optimizing the capasity and personnel costs are more significant. In the long distance flights there hasn't been similar cost advanteges because fuel costs play important role and Ryanair and Wizzair have very limited possibilities to get cheaper fuel than any other airline company. However new less fuel consuming airplanes have made this long distance market more interesting for low cost carriers and Norwegian Air Shuttle have already started their long distance flights. They are using Boeing 787 Dreamliner for their continental flights. Norwegian flies from Nordic capitals (Stockholm, Oslo and Copenhagen) to New York, Florida, Los Angeles and Bangkok. In addition to this they have some continental routes to the US from London Gatwick Airport. Ryanair has published some mixed views about their possible long distance flights but they are definitely seriously considering the opportunity.
Copenhagen intense competition thanks to Ryanair
If you look at the European map it's easy to understand why Copenhagen is so important airport between Northern and Central Europe. Ryanair opened 17 direct routes from Copenhagen and that made competition between Ryanair, Easyjet and Norwegian very intense in Denmark. If you look at the Skyscanner you can find more than 10 cities where you can now fly one way flight with less than 20€ from Copenhagen. If Wizzair opens flights to Copenhagen it's possible that Copenhagen becomes similar low fares hub as Brussels Charleroi, Milan Bergamo and London airports. More information about Ryanair routes from Copenhagen can be found here: Ryanair cheap flights from Copenhagen.
Cabin baggage fees have not become popular - Ryanair is not following Wizzair example
Wizzair launched some times ago policy of two sizes hand luggage. Small Cabin Bag, that fits below the seat in front of you (Free cabin bag) and Large Cabin bag that is approximately same size as normal cabin baggage on other airlines (Cabin baggage fee). I assumed that if this seems to work Ryanair would follow the example but they haven't so I assume that they have come to a conclusion that it's not generating them more profits than current fees.

Can low fares airlines compete in long distance flights?
Can low fares airlines compete in long distance flights? In the history low fares airlines have been succesful in short and medium term flights. If you take a look at routes from/to popular european tourist cities you can find many low fares airlines competing and many of them are still making profit but there is very limited supply of low fares long distance flights. The main reason is that long distance airlines get most cost savings in fast and efficient use of airplanes and personnel. In short and medium term flights it really makes difference wheather the plane and crew are at the airport 30 or 50 minutes between two 1 hour flights. When we are talking about flights over 8 hours this difference becomes less important and cost advantage is less important.
Norwegian low fares airline Norwegian Air Shuttle AS believes that they can get cost advantage using new Boeing 787 Dreamliners that need less fuel than older planes. Unfortunately the story of Boeing 787 Dreamliner is full of technical challenges and it's not yet certain that Norwegians can start their long distance cheap flights in May 2013 as they have planned. Norwegians seem to believe that Boeing can solve battery problems of Dreamliner and they are selling their Stockholm-New York, Oslo-New York, Stockholm-Bangkok and Oslo-Bangkok flights at norwegian.com. It's interesting to see if also long distance flights become playground of carries like Ryanair and EasyJet. When can we see first London Stansted-US flights with GBP 99/one way.

Norwegian opens new routes from London Gatwick - Norwegian competing against EasyJet
Norwegian Air Shuttle is starting interesting expansion to the UK cheap flights market. For Nordic fliers Norwegian is very familiar low cost carrier from Nordic countries to the central and southern Europe. Norwegian Air Shuttle is operating with business model very close to EasyJet. They focus on normal airports and avoid smaller low cost airports like Milan Bergamo or Frankfurt Hahn. In London Norwegian operates at Gatwick airport.
In April 2013 Norwegian Air Shuttle opens nine new cheap flights from London Gatwick:

Norwegian Air Shuttle Autumn sales campaign started this morning - Website norwegian.com very slow
Cheap Nordic low fares airline Norwegian Air Shuttle started today morning their big Autumn Sales campaign. Campaign traffic at norwegian.com makes their website very slow at the moment. For those who are frustrated to Service Temporary Available at norwegian.com, I can tell that you that there is nothing so special that you should be seriously angry about this problem. The so called "Cheap Autumn Sales Prices" are not extremely cheap. I must admit that on the other there are relatively cheap prices available for many dates so there's also something good in this campaign.

Norwegian Air Shuttle big Autumn Sales start Tue 21.8 - Cheap flights Copenhagen, Oslo, Stockholm, Helsinki and many other cities
Norwegian Air Shuttle is a low fares airline with strong market position in Scandinavia. In Central Europe they market themselves as gateway to Scandinavia. Norwegian flies from many european metropoles to scandinavian capitals. They have flights from Paris, Rome, Barcelona, London and many other city to scandinavian capitals Copenhagen, Stockholm, Oslo and Helsinki.
Norwegian Air Shuttle is definetely a low fares airline but not as much oriented on cost savings as for example Ryanair. Just like EasyJet Norwegian Air Shuttle usually uses normal airports and avoids more distant airports that Ryanair uses (Milan Bergamo, Brussels Charleroi, London Luton/Stansted, Barcelona Girona etc.).
Norwegian Air Shuttle will have a big Autumn Sales campaign starting Tuesday August 21st. Sales prices are still a secret but it's very likely that there will be cheap flights between Scandinavian capitals and big european cities. If you are looking for cheap flights to Copenhagen, Stockholm, Helsinki or Oslo, it's worth visiting website of Norwegian Air Shuttle next week.

EasyJet cheap flights to Sweden
Unfortunately EasyJet doesn't offer many flights north from Copenhagen. Previously EasyJet flew to Finland and offered Helsinki-Paris and Helsinki-London flights but currently they fly only to capital of Sweden Stockholm. Only EasyJet cheap flight to Stockholm is at the moment from Geneva.
Nordic countries have been rather difficult market for big european low fares airlines such as EasyJet and Ryanair. Long distances and small population perhaps make these nordic countries unattractive markets and local competitor Norwegian Air Shuttle has strong market position.

Major low cost carriers in Europe - Who offers the cheapest flights in Europe?
ELFAA is European Low Fares Airline Association and its mission is "To ensure that European policy and legislation promote free and equal competition to enable the continued growth and development of low fares into the future, allowing a greater number of people to travel by air.". ELFAA has nine member airlines and they collectively carry 190 million passangers every year. According to the ELFAAs statistics low fares airlines currently account for over 43% of scheduled intra-European traffic.
Current airline members of ELFAA are:
In media Ryanair is very often the low cost carrier that is mentioned as the most agressive in cutting their costs and offering the cheapest flights. That is very often true. Ryanair clearly is positioned itself as a very pure low fares airline.
When I have searched for the cheapest flights in Europe I have found that very often Ryanair and Wizzair are the companies that use the most agressive pricing. Sometimes they offer very cheap flights to fill airplanes but they also know when to set prices high. During peak seasons such as Eastern, Christmas and European summer holidays they can be surprisingly expensive.
Where to find the cheapest flights in Europe?
If you would ask me where to find the cheapest flights in Europe I would give you an advice to look at the routes outside top 10 cities in Europe. There are many routes where you can find cheap flights like 19,99€ but the cheapest are very often the flights between smaller cities. For example my cheapest flight has been 0,99€ flight from Turku (Finland) to Gdansk (Poland). This was Wizzair flight.
Current airline members of ELFAA are:
- EasyJet (United Kingdom)
- Flybe (United Kingdom)
- Jet2.com (United Kingdom)
- Norwegian Air Shuttle (Norway)
- Ryanair (Ireland)
- Sverige Flyg (Sweden)
- transavia.com (The Netherlands)
- Vueling (Spain)
- Wizz Air (Hungary)
